He was listed as a resident in the census report at Butler Co., PA, in 1850. Butler County, Pa. records show John owned land and resided in Donegal Township later part of Fairview Township. Records from Memorial to a Grand Old Patriot, Thomas Gray indicate James and his brothers, Jesse and Alexander, were from Renfrew or Brownsdale area south of Butler, Pa. Deeds recorded at the Butler County Court in Butler, Pa. (Deed Book "U", P. 243, 244 and 245) contradict the Renfrew or Brownsdale connection but leave little doubt that John was the father of the children listed below. There may have been other children not listed here.

"Memorial to a Grand Old Patriot - Thomas Gray", Butler County Library, Butler, Pa. James and Elizabeth Brown were listed on the 1850 Butler County, Pa. Census for East Connoquenessing Township, but moved shortly after the census was taken to Pike County, Oh. Their years of farming in Butler County, without the later acquired knowledge of how to replenish the soil, had left the land depleted of its richness, and helped bring about the uneasy wish to move to other land where there might be richer farming opportunities. About 1849 two of James' brothers, Jesse and Alexander, traveled to southern Ohio to examine land and were convinced that it was a good place to settle. Jesse and Alexander relocated to Pike County, Oh. the following year taking their widowed mother and a sister, Margaret Teagart, with them. Having Settled in Pike County, they persuaded James to relocate there also. James and Elizabeth took their seven children, household goods, horses, wagons, harnesses, other essentials and boated down the Ohio River to Portsmouth to the mouth of the Scioto River. Another half a day's journey up the Scioto, and they rested at their destination. "Camp", the Browns called it and later sent word back to Pennsylvania that it was Jasper, Pike County, Oh. In the fall of 1851, after his first harvest in the new home, James and his eldest son, William, took their crops to market at Portsmouth via the Ohio & Erie Canal. James and William were returning home late on a stormy evening, young William driving the horses on the towpath and James steering the boat. Something went wrong while locking through one of the gates at the Elbow Lock and James was swept overboard into the canal and drowned. All that the frightened, fourteen year old lad could find was his father's hat floating on the water. William sadly rode home to report and seek help.

Census for East Connoquenessing Township, but moved shortly after the census was taken to Pike County, Oh. Their years of farming in Butler County, without the later acquired knowledge of how to replenish the soil, had left the land depleted of its richness, and helped bring about the uneasy wish to move to other land where there might be richer farming opportunities. About 1849 two of James' brothers, Jesse and Alexander, traveled to southern Ohio to examine land and were convinced that it was a good place to settle. Jesse and Alexander relocated to Pike County, Oh. the following year taking their widowed mother and a sister, Margaret Teagart, with them. Having Settled in Pike County, they persuaded James to relocate there also. James and Elizabeth took their seven children, household goods, horses, wagons, harnesses, other essentials and boated down the Ohio River to Portsmouth to the mouth of the Scioto River. Another half a day's journey up the Scioto, and they rested at their destination. "Camp", the Browns called it and later sent word back to Pennsylvania that it was Jasper, Pike County, Oh. In the fall of 1851, after his first harvest in the new home, James and his eldest son, William, took their crops to market at Portsmouth via the Ohio & Erie Canal. James and William were returning home late on a stormy evening, young William driving the horses on the towpath and James steering the boat. Something went wrong while locking through one of the gates at the Elbow Lock and James was swept overboard into the canal and drowned. All that the frightened, fourteen year old lad could find was his father's hat floating on the water. William sadly rode home to report and seek help.
