Generation One
1. John1 Callicott (2698). John (2698) was born in Isle of Wight Co., VA, circa 1650. He married Rachel|Mary Hopkins (2699) circa 1675. John (2698) died after 1717 in Essex Co., VA.
John is first Callicott ancestor that has been identified. The name John Calcot appears in available records as a witness in a land transfer as early as 1671. At that time, John would probably have been at least twenty-one years old. Most official entries show John in Essex County, Va. during the period of 1708-1717. Using the above dates, it can be determined that John lived during the era 1650-1717, a period of at least sixty-seven years. His surname in most records was spelled four ways; Calcott, Callicot, Callicote, and Calicote. Certain positive determinations can be made concerning John but numerous other questions remain unanswered. Many of the old county records were transferred to the state capitol at Richmond and subsequently destroyed when Richmond was torched during the Civil War. We are not certain, for instance, of the name of John's wife; it was either Rachel or Mary. From William Hopkins' Will, dated June 18, 1718, we learn that John's wife's maiden name was Hopkins and that she was William Hopkins' sister. We know that John was an influential person in his community as evidenced by the numerous official records bearing his name. We know John moved sometime after 1671 from Isle of Wight County to Essex County, Va. and that he had three sons. In line with the normal practice of having large families during that period, it is highly probable there were more than three sons, however, information on any additional children is not available.

Generation Two
2. James2 Callicott (2700) (John1). James (2700) was born in Essex Co., VA, in 1705. He married Agatha Harrison (2701) circa 1730. James (2700) died in 1778 in Prince Edward Co., VA. James (2700)'s will was probated in Prince Edward Co., VA, on 26 Sep 1778.
James is first found listed as William Hopkins' nephew in William Hopkins' Will dated June 18, 1718. James migrated from Essex County to Prince Edward County, Va. about 1740-1750 and settled in the area of Snails Creek. His name is first recorded in Prince Edward County when he was appointed a land processioner on Sept. 12, 1759. Records show James Callicott bought and sold several tracts of land in Prince Edward County during the period 1762-1777 becoming a large land owner. His neighbors included the Paces, Harrisons, Griffins, and Bagles all of whom migrated from Essex County. It is known from James' Last Will & Testament, dated Aug. 17, 1778, that his wife's name was Agatha. She is believed to be the mother of all the children listed in his will. There is no proof but Agatha's maiden name is thought to be "Harrison". This belief is based on three facts: 1- During that period it was a common practice to use the wife's maiden name as the first or middle name of one of the children and one of their sons was named "Harrison". 2- The Harrison family was one of the nearest neighbors to James and Agatha in the Snails Creek Area of Prince Edward County. 3-There were several land transactions between James Callicott and the Harrisons. How many children James and Agatha may have had is not known. It is known that at the time he prepared his will in 1778, James had three sons and one daughter living. One son, Bailey, being away from home serving as a soldier in the Army. Normally, the practice at the time was to list the children in the will in order of their birth, oldest first and youngest last. There appears to be an exception in this case because the oldest living child, Bailey, was away in the Army when the will was prepared. Using the date of his will, Aug. 17, 1778, and the date it was probated, Sept. 26, 1778, we know that James died in Prince Edward County, Va. the latter part of August or early part of September, 1778 and that he was in excess of sixty years of age at the time of death. His four children were all born in Prince Edward County, Va. Dates of birth and death are not specific but generally represent the period in which they lived.

5. John Bailey3 Callicott (2683) (James2, John1). John (2683) was born in Prince Edward Co., VA, circa 1745. He married Sarah James (2684) circa 1770. John (2683) died before 1820 in Montgomery Co., NC.
John is believed to have been born in Prince Edward County, Va., the oldest of the four known children of James and Agatha Callicott. He is thought to have married Sarah James, daughter of Thomas James of Charlotte County, Va. From his father's will, dated August 17, 1778, we learn that John Bailey was away serving in the Continental Army, probably with the local militia, when the will was written. Other family information indicates he fought at the Battle of Yorktown. John's Revolutionary War service has not been verified. John Bailey and Sarah moved from Prince Edward County, Va. to Montgomery County, North Carolina about 1795-1796. Some land transactions refer to John as John Callicott while others refer to him as Bailey Callicott. Accordingly, it is difficult to determine just how much land John may have owned in Montgomery County. The burning of the Montgomery County Court House on March 31, 1843 destroyed the early records for that county. The basic records for genealogy research such as land transactions, wills, and marriage records were lost. Incidentally, it was the father of Salina Spencer, John's grand daughter- in-law, and her brother, Herbert, that were arrested and charged with that fire. It was apparently set to destroy evidence of forgery and an indictment for altering a land deed. The 1820 Census of Moore County, N.C. shows Sarah Callecotte, over age 45, as head of the household. John is presumed to have died prior to 1820 and Sarah moved down the road into Moore County to be near her son, James, who was married and living in Moore County, N.C. The John Bailey Callicott home in Montgomery County was located very near the Moore County line and Sarah would have moved only short distance. 9. William4 Callicoat (2628) (John3 Callicott, James2, John1). William (2628) was born in Prince Edward Co., VA, in 1770. He married Elizabeth Ashworth (2629) in Charlotte Co., VA, on 22 Dec 1791. William (2628) died before 1810 in Franklin Co., VA. His body was interred in Franklin Co., VA.
William was married to Elizabeth Ashworth by the Rev. John Williams, a prominent minister in Virginia at that time and a respected neighbor of the Callicotts. The surety was his Uncle Beverly Callicott. The Ashworths were also close neighbors and friends of the Callicotts for years extending back to Essex County, Va. William and Elizabeth sold the land they owned in Charlotte County, Va. Oct. 4, 1794 and moved to Montgomery County, N.C. where they bought a home in town. They stayed in Montgomery County, N.C. only a short while and moved to Franklin County, Va. The 1810 Census for Franklin County, Va. shows Elizabeth as a land owner and head of household, indicating that William died prior to 1810. There is information on only three children of William and Elizabeth, all born in Va.

McCager, known as Kager, Kay, or K.K. during his lifetime, married Paulina Jane "Sanders" Lewis about 1896. Paulina was widowed at the time with four children from her previous marriage to George W. Lewis; Joshua C., George S., John C., and Hartley. McCager and Paulina had five children, only three of whom survived to adulthood. Lucy Kingery died in infancy and Benjamin died after being shot in the temple while hunting in Lawrence County at the age of eighteen. Both children are buried in the Kingry Cemetery. Lucy's grave is not marked. McCager, known as one of the best square cut stone masons in the area, also farmed, taught school and worked as cooper. He died at the age of 75 yrs., 9 mos., and 26 days. He was listed as a resident in the census report in Windsor Twp., Lawrence Co., OH, in 1900.

Jerome moved to Clark County, Oh. from Lawrence County in 1923 bringing his parents and siblings with him. Jerome's father, McCager Kingery, died the following year and was buried with his parents and grandparents in the Kingry Cemetery in Lawrence County. Jerome's first employment in the Springfield area was at the McKenzie Lumber Company. He worked there with his half brother, Joshua Lewis, who had been in Clark County since about 1921. Jerome was hired by the International Harvester Company in 1934 where he worked in the truck assembly plant until he retired. Jerome farmed and built houses on the side most of his adult life. After the death of his first wife, Jerome hired Corinne Swope to keep house and stay with his children while he worked. The nation was in the middle of the great depression and Corinne was separated from her husband, Luther, by economic necessity. Luther Swope could not find work and could not support Corinne and their young son, Carl. The homeless family moved to Springfield from Detroit hoping to stay with Corinne's mother but Mrs. Wolcott would not permit Luther to stay or possibly did not have the means to support all three. Therefore, Luther returned to Detroit to look for work while Corinne and Carl stayed with Corinne's mother. Corinne became pregnant with Ronnie while keeping house for Jerome and moved back to Detroit when the baby was due to avoid a scandal. When the baby was born, Corinne gave the baby the Swope name. Corinne and Luther divorced shortly after Ronnie was born and Corinne married Jerome in 1937. Luther never accepted the child as his, which it wasn't, and Corinne never allowed Jerome to claim the child as his own, even after they were married. Of all Jerome's children, Ronnie bears the most striking resemblance to Jerome.

Descendants of John Callicott (ca 1650-1717)
1. John1 Callicott (2698). John (2698) was born in Isle of Wight Co., VA, circa 1650. He married Rachel|Mary Hopkins (2699) circa 1675. John (2698) died after 1717 in Essex Co., VA.
John is first Callicott ancestor that has been identified. The name John Calcot appears in available records as a witness in a land transfer as early as 1671. At that time, John would probably have been at least twenty-one years old. Most official entries show John in Essex County, Va. during the period of 1708-1717. Using the above dates, it can be determined that John lived during the era 1650-1717, a period of at least sixty-seven years. His surname in most records was spelled four ways; Calcott, Callicot, Callicote, and Calicote. Certain positive determinations can be made concerning John but numerous other questions remain unanswered. Many of the old county records were transferred to the state capitol at Richmond and subsequently destroyed when Richmond was torched during the Civil War. We are not certain, for instance, of the name of John's wife; it was either Rachel or Mary. From William Hopkins' Will, dated June 18, 1718, we learn that John's wife's maiden name was Hopkins and that she was William Hopkins' sister. We know that John was an influential person in his community as evidenced by the numerous official records bearing his name. We know John moved sometime after 1671 from Isle of Wight County to Essex County, Va. and that he had three sons. In line with the normal practice of having large families during that period, it is highly probable there were more than three sons, however, information on any additional children is not available.

James is first found listed as William Hopkins' nephew in William Hopkins' Will dated June 18, 1718. James migrated from Essex County to Prince Edward County, Va. about 1740-1750 and settled in the area of Snails Creek. His name is first recorded in Prince Edward County when he was appointed a land processioner on Sept. 12, 1759. Records show James Callicott bought and sold several tracts of land in Prince Edward County during the period 1762-1777 becoming a large land owner. His neighbors included the Paces, Harrisons, Griffins, and Bagles all of whom migrated from Essex County. It is known from James' Last Will & Testament, dated Aug. 17, 1778, that his wife's name was Agatha. She is believed to be the mother of all the children listed in his will. There is no proof but Agatha's maiden name is thought to be "Harrison". This belief is based on three facts: 1- During that period it was a common practice to use the wife's maiden name as the first or middle name of one of the children and one of their sons was named "Harrison". 2- The Harrison family was one of the nearest neighbors to James and Agatha in the Snails Creek Area of Prince Edward County. 3-There were several land transactions between James Callicott and the Harrisons. How many children James and Agatha may have had is not known. It is known that at the time he prepared his will in 1778, James had three sons and one daughter living. One son, Bailey, being away from home serving as a soldier in the Army. Normally, the practice at the time was to list the children in the will in order of their birth, oldest first and youngest last. There appears to be an exception in this case because the oldest living child, Bailey, was away in the Army when the will was prepared. Using the date of his will, Aug. 17, 1778, and the date it was probated, Sept. 26, 1778, we know that James died in Prince Edward County, Va. the latter part of August or early part of September, 1778 and that he was in excess of sixty years of age at the time of death. His four children were all born in Prince Edward County, Va. Dates of birth and death are not specific but generally represent the period in which they lived.

5. John Bailey3 Callicott (2683) (James2, John1). John (2683) was born in Prince Edward Co., VA, circa 1745. He married Sarah James (2684) circa 1770. John (2683) died before 1820 in Montgomery Co., NC.
John is believed to have been born in Prince Edward County, Va., the oldest of the four known children of James and Agatha Callicott. He is thought to have married Sarah James, daughter of Thomas James of Charlotte County, Va. From his father's will, dated August 17, 1778, we learn that John Bailey was away serving in the Continental Army, probably with the local militia, when the will was written. Other family information indicates he fought at the Battle of Yorktown. John's Revolutionary War service has not been verified. John Bailey and Sarah moved from Prince Edward County, Va. to Montgomery County, North Carolina about 1795-1796. Some land transactions refer to John as John Callicott while others refer to him as Bailey Callicott. Accordingly, it is difficult to determine just how much land John may have owned in Montgomery County. The burning of the Montgomery County Court House on March 31, 1843 destroyed the early records for that county. The basic records for genealogy research such as land transactions, wills, and marriage records were lost. Incidentally, it was the father of Salina Spencer, John's grand daughter- in-law, and her brother, Herbert, that were arrested and charged with that fire. It was apparently set to destroy evidence of forgery and an indictment for altering a land deed. The 1820 Census of Moore County, N.C. shows Sarah Callecotte, over age 45, as head of the household. John is presumed to have died prior to 1820 and Sarah moved down the road into Moore County to be near her son, James, who was married and living in Moore County, N.C. The John Bailey Callicott home in Montgomery County was located very near the Moore County line and Sarah would have moved only short distance. An unknown person participated in the Veteran event in Am. Revolution.

William was married to Elizabeth Ashworth by the Rev. John Williams, a prominent minister in Virginia at that time and a respected neighbor of the Callicotts. The surety was his Uncle Beverly Callicott. The Ashworths were also close neighbors and friends of the Callicotts for years extending back to Essex County, Va. William and Elizabeth sold the land they owned in Charlotte County, Va. Oct. 4, 1794 and moved to Montgomery County, N.C. where they bought a home in town. They stayed in Montgomery County, N.C. only a short while and moved to Franklin County, Va. The 1810 Census for Franklin County, Va. shows Elizabeth as a land owner and head of household, indicating that William died prior to 1810. There is information on only three children of William and Elizabeth, all born in Va.

McCager, known as Kager, Kay, or K.K. during his lifetime, married Paulina Jane "Sanders" Lewis about 1896. Paulina was widowed at the time with four children from her previous marriage to George W. Lewis; Joshua C., George S., John C., and Hartley. McCager and Paulina had five children, only three of whom survived to adulthood. Lucy Kingery died in infancy and Benjamin died after being shot in the temple while hunting in Lawrence County at the age of eighteen. Both children are buried in the Kingry Cemetery. Lucy's grave is not marked. McCager, known as one of the best square cut stone masons in the area, also farmed, taught school and worked as cooper. He died at the age of 75 yrs., 9 mos., and 26 days. He was listed as a resident in the census report in Windsor Twp., Lawrence Co., OH, in 1900.

Jerome moved to Clark County, Oh. from Lawrence County in 1923 bringing his parents and siblings with him. Jerome's father, McCager Kingery, died the following year and was buried with his parents and grandparents in the Kingry Cemetery in Lawrence County. Jerome's first employment in the Springfield area was at the McKenzie Lumber Company. He worked there with his half brother, Joshua Lewis, who had been in Clark County since about 1921. Jerome was hired by the International Harvester Company in 1934 where he worked in the truck assembly plant until he retired. Jerome farmed and built houses on the side most of his adult life. After the death of his first wife, Jerome hired Corinne Swope to keep house and stay with his children while he worked. The nation was in the middle of the great depression and Corinne was separated from her husband, Luther, by economic necessity. Luther Swope could not find work and could not support Corinne and their young son, Carl. The homeless family moved to Springfield from Detroit hoping to stay with Corinne's mother but Mrs. Wolcott would not permit Luther to stay or possibly did not have the means to support all three. Therefore, Luther returned to Detroit to look for work while Corinne and Carl stayed with Corinne's mother. Corinne became pregnant with Ronnie while keeping house for Jerome and moved back to Detroit when the baby was due to avoid a scandal. When the baby was born, Corinne gave the baby the Swope name. Corinne and Luther divorced shortly after Ronnie was born and Corinne married Jerome in 1937. Luther never accepted the child as his, which it wasn't, and Corinne never allowed Jerome to claim the child as his own, even after they were married. Of all Jerome's children, Ronnie bears the most striking resemblance to Jerome.
