Descendants of Theobald Dewalt Mechling (4045)

Generation One

1. Theobald Dewalt1 Mechling (4045). Theobald (4045) was born at Germany circa 1710. He married Anna Elizabeth Lauer (4046). Theobald (4045) died in Apr 1765 at (Lehigh Co. since 1812), Northampton Co., PA. His body was interred at Dillingersville, PA, at Old Graveyard. Theobald (4045)'s will was probated at Philadelphia, PA, on 8 May 1765.
Theobald Mechling and his brother, Jacob, arrived in Philadelphia, Pa. on September 11, 1728 aboard the ship "James Goodwill" with David Crockett as master. Since they were numbered among the ninety or so Palatines aboard, it has widely been believed that the Mechling brothers came from the Palatinate, which is in the southwestern part of Germany. A great-great-grandson gives credence to this theory, listing the Mechling home as having been in Rheinfels, Bavaria, which today is a part of Baden-Wurtenburg on the Rhine River. However, since Dewalt, eldest son of Theobald, named two of his properties in Westmoreland County, Pa. as "Mechlinburg" and "Streilitz" respectively, place names in the province of Mecklenburg in northeastern Germany, doubt has been cast upon the Palatinate origin. Also the Palatines were mostly Catholic, while Mechlinburg was mostly Lutheran, the religion of the Mechlings. Only further research will determine their correct origin. The "James Goodwill" sailed from Rotterdam, Holland to Deal, England, where on June 15, 1728, it left for America. Aboard were 42 men above the age of 16, comprising 37 families. Theobald's name is spelled as Teobald Makeling on the ships's manifest. Upon arrival in Philadelphia, they went before the Provincial Council to declare their intent to settle peacefully in this country. They then signed a declaration of allegiance to King George II of England. Theobald signed his name with the letter "D" for Deobald or Dewalt, a German derivation. Theobald and Jacob went to Germantown, at that time a separate city from Philadelphia, where they engaged in the tannery business for a few years. It is quite likely that an older relative was already living in Germantown, as buried in Germantown is a Maria Mechlin, wife of Samuel, who died June 18, 1759, aged 61 years, 2 months, and 4 days. There is no record of a Samuel Mechlin in Germantown at that time, and one can suppose that this Samuel had preceded the Mechling brothers to Germantown, possibly establishing the tannery business, which may have attracted them to Germantown in the first place. The name Samuel is carried down in the Mechling family. Nothing definite is known about Theobald for the next few years, but apparently he married sometime during that period, to Anna Elizabeth Lauer, daughter of John Peter and Anna Margaret Lauer. In 1731, he obtained a grant of 125 acres in Bucks County, Pa. from Thomas and Richard Penn, who were sons of William Penn, and were also proprietors of the province of Pennsylvania. According to the record of land patents, warrants, and purchases, Theobald secured land as follows: 29 Jun 1734 - warrant for 125 acres - an estimate 12 Jun 1737 - 144 acres and 120 perches surveyed 22 Jun 1744 - warrant for 20 acres 17 Jul 1744 - 23 acres and 18 perches surveyed 29 Apr 1747 - warrant for 11 acres 05 May 1747 - 11 acres and 80 perches surveyed 16 Sep 1757 - 17 acres and 116 perches surveyed 06 Oct 1757 - warrant for 25 acres Theobald moved to this land in Bucks County and built a log cabin, which is still standing, now incorporated into the body of a much larger house, on the property near Zionsville. The original log cabin is now the middle room in this house, with the original fireplace. This house is one of the few remaining pre- Revolutionary War houses in that area. It is located near a stream, which was once called Mechling's Creek, later known as Walter's Creek. A dam was erected across the stream and a mill was built. In 1735, the Provincial Council ordered a road built, to be called the King's Highway. It passed close to the Mechling cabin. In 1737, Theobald signed a petition to have the Upper Milford district, in which his property was located, assigned to a separate region, which was finally done in 1752, when Northampton County was formed. It became a part of Lehigh County in 1812. Theobald was one of the founders of the Upper Milford Lutheran Church, and donated thirty acres for the site of the church and a burial ground. His donation of fifteen shillings toward the pastor's salary in the years 1756, 1757, 1758, and 1759 made him one of the three largest contributors. By 1757, differences of opinion arose in the congregation and several members, including Theobald, broke away and started a new congregation some two miles away, in the vicinity of present day Zionsville. Nothing is known concerning any active military duty on the part of Theobald, but there is one brief item in the Pennsylvania Archives, Series 5, Vol. 1, Page 222. A report of the constable sent to patrol the frontier during the French and Indian War, which mentions that Dewalt Mechlin of Upper Milford Township had a horse returned. The report is dated June 10, 1758. Theobald died in April 1765 leaving a will, which was signed "Davold Mechlin" and his mark "D". He is buried along with his wife, Anna Elizabeth (her death date is not known), in the old graveyard near Dillingersville. The cemetery has been preserved, but the Mechlin stones have long since vanished. (Taken from "Mechling, Mechlin, Macklin", Vol. III, by Dorothy Hallarn Mercy). Theobald (4045) immigrated, on 11 Sep 1728. Destination: (an unknown value).
Children of Theobald Dewalt1 Mechling (4045) and Anna Elizabeth Lauer (4046) were as follows:

Generation Two

2. Dewalt 'John Theobald'2 Mechling (2421) (Theobald1). Dewalt (2421) was born at Germantown, PA, on 11 Nov 1731. He married Sabilla Kohler|Kaler (2422). Dewalt (2421) died on 29 Mar 1816 at Northampton Co., PA, at age 84. His body was interred at Westmoreland Co., PA, at Fightner's Cemetery.

Last Will and Testament of John Mechling, dated June 1847 (Recorded at the Westmoreland County Court, Greensburg, Pa.) Paul Miller Ruff, a Lutheran Minister, researcher and author of German Church Records of Westmoreland County, Pa. 1772-1791 , states that the name "Mechlin" is definitely not German and is possibly a German spelling of the Scotch-Irish name of "McClain". Mr. Ruff states in his research on Westmoreland County, Pa. that many non-German persons intermarried with the predominately German population of the area. These non-German families, the majority of which were Scotch-Irish, had their children baptized by the Lutheran and Reformed Ministers who served the area. These early church records were recorded in German with German spellings. Mr. Ruff's opinion on the origin of the "Mechlin" name needs further research. There is a district of "Mecklenburg" in what used to be East Germany which would indicate that "Mecklen" is a German name. Theobald/Dewalt and Sibilla Mechling are found numerous times in German Church Records of Westmoreland County, Pa. The earliest being the baptism of their daughter, Anna Maria, on March 17, 1776 in the Siwickle Settlement by Balthaser Meyer, Schoolmaster. Veteran American Revolution.
Children of Dewalt 'John Theobald'2 Mechling (2421) and Sabilla Kohler|Kaler (2422) were as follows:

3. Peter 'John Peter'2 Mechling (4047) (Theobald1). Peter (4047) was born at PA circa 1737. He married Anna Barbara Kurr (4048) circa 1754. Peter (4047) died in 1765.
Children of Peter 'John Peter'2 Mechling (4047) and Anna Barbara Kurr (4048) were:

7. John Jacob2 Mechling (2381) (Theobald1). John (2381) was born at Bucks Co., PA, on 27 Feb 1747. He married Catherine or Catharina Unknown (2420) at PA. John (2381) died on 8 Nov 1824 at Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA, at age 77. His body was interred at Westmoreland Co., PA, at Fightner's Cemetery.
John Jacob Mechling was the third son of Theobald and Anna Elizabeth "Lauer" Mechling. He was born in the log cabin in Bucks County, Pa., and baptized 30 Apr 1747, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Upper Milford. Like his brothers, he was probably taught the rudiments of education in the church school established in the nearby Lutheran Church. The next information found on John Jacob is when he, at 16 years of age, was a sponsor for John Peter Mechling's daughter, Catharine, at her baptism on 16 Oct 1763 in the Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Salisbury, Northampton County, Pa. John Peter was Jacob's brother. Sponsor with him was Catharine Hittler. There has been some speculation that Catharine Hittler might have been the daughter of Peter Hittel, who lived in the area, but research has shown that Catharine Hittel died in youth. George Michael Hittel also had a daughter, Catharine, but she married George Knappenberg. On 15 Feb 1765, in the Jordan Lutheran Church, Jacob again was sponsor at a baptism, this time for his nephew, Johann Jacob Steininger, son of his sister, Elizabeth, and her husband, Lenhardt Steininger. His name was spelled as Machle on the records. His co-sponsor was a Catharina Haman, daughter of the late Balthasar Haman. Sometime within the next two or three years, Jacob as he usually was known, married Catharine "surname unknown". It is quite possible, that she was Catharina Haman, who was sponsor with him at the baptism of his nephew. On 26 Dec 1765, a Catharine "Mockin" was godmother for a child born to John Adam and Anna Eva Gebhard. This could be Catharine Mechling with another variation in the spelling. If so, then she and Jacob were already married. He being eighteen years, old and she, seventeen. Catharine was born 13 Dec 1748. Jacob and Catharine had nine children. The first three children, possibly four, were born in Northampton County, Pa. Jacob followed his elder brother, Dewalt, to Westmoreland County, Pa., and on 14 Apr 1774, Jacob acquired 225 acres of land in Hempfield Township. The 1783 tax list shows him with 300 acres, three horses, four cows, and six sheep. When the American Revolution started, Jacob enlisted in the 4th. Battalion, Pennsylvania Militia from Westmoreland County and was soon made Captain. After the war ended, he still took part in military activities defending the state's borders from Indian attacks. Jacob, besides being a farmer and miller, as he was listed on the 1800 Census, was also active in civic affairs. In 1794, he was appointed Tax Assessor for Westmoreland County. In 1785, he was elected coroner. The same year he acted as judge in an election and helped elect a sheriff for Westmoreland County. In 1813, Jacob deeded a piece of property called Mechlingburg to his son, Philip. Jacob died in November, 1824, leaving a will. He was 77 years old. Catherine lived until 18 Aug 1832. Both are buried in Fightner's Cemetery near Youngwood, in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pa. William Mechling is found in the 1830 Butler County, Pa. Census and continues on the Butler County Censuses through 1850. His name appears in the Pike County, Oh. Census for Camp Creek Township in 1860. William purchased 333 acres along Camp Creek in Pike County, Oh. from Philip M. Warder on May 17, 1853 for the sum of $1,998.00 (Pike County Deed Records, Vol. 12, P.510) indicating he moved to Pike County about that time. The 1850 Butler County Census lists William Mechling with five children but no spouse. The 1860 Pike County Census lists William Mechling, Catharine as his spouse, and two children. These facts suggest William was a widower in 1850. A son, James (age 16), shown on the 1860 census was probably Catharine's son by a previous marriage. William Mechling is buried next to his oldest son, H.K. Mechlin, in Henry Chapel Cemetery, Bethel Hill Rd., Camp Creek Township., Pike County, Oh. He left a will dated June 7, 1867, that is believed to be recorded at the Pike County Probate Court, in Waverly, Oh. He An "Indenture" recorded in the Butler County Court, Butler, Pa. on June 28, 1852 between William Mechling and Henry Kuhn Mechling (Deed Records - Vol. T, Page 356) positively establishes that the William Mechling named in John Mechling's Last Will is the same William Mechling that moved to Pike County, Oh. about 1853: "...and the said John Mechling, dec'd, by his last will and testament dated the 29th. of Aug., A.D. 1827 did demise the same to his sons; Wm., John & Joseph..." on 28 Jun 1852.
