3. John Jacob3 Rector (Hans Jacob Richter) (298) (Christopher2 Richter, Johannes1). John (298) was born at Trupbach, Germany, in 1674. He married Elizabeth Fishback (299) at Trupbach, Germany, on 17 Jan 1711. John (298) died circa 1728 at Germantown, VA. His body was interred at Germantown, VA.
John's name was Hans Jacob Richter. "Richter", meaning judge, was anglicized to Rector after one or two generations of his descendants had been living in America. The "Hans" in his german name is a short form of "Johannes" and is equivalent to Jack. During the governorship of Alexander Spotswood, 1710-1722, iron ore deposits were discovered in what is now northeast Orange County, Virginia. Prior to this time there had been no iron ore mining nor production of iron products in the colonies. All much needed items made of this metal were imported from England at great expense. The Governor fully realized that if this newly found and valuable resource could be mined and processed into farm implements, tools, household items, guns, etc., it would be of great benefit to the Colony. Swiss promoter and developer Baron Von Graffenreid was engaged by Governor Spotswood to recruit immigrants from the old Principality of Nassau- Siegen, now part of Westphalia, Germany to mine and process these newly found deposits. This area of Germany, about forty-five miles east of Bonn, was selected because iron ore had been mined, processed and iron products manufactured there for centuries. Twelve families, consisting of forty-two individuals with a knowledge of iron ore processing and manufacturing from the Nassau-Siegen area, were persuaded to emigrate to the New World. Our subject, John Jacob Rector, his wife, Elizabeth Fishback, and their son, John, were one of these families. In the Summer of 1713, the twelve families departed their German homeland for the New World. Their first stop was Maidstone, England and on arrival they found their promoter was without money or provisions for the voyage to America. During the winter of 1713-1714 they worked to pay for their own passage and in April 1714 landed not far from Williamsburg, Virginia, the seat of government in that colony. A stone marker has been erected at Germanna, Fauquier County, Va. to commemorate the founding of the first permanent German Reformed Congregation in America. The names of the heads of the immigrant families are listed there and among those are John Jacob Rector. 4. John4 Rector (Johannes Richter) (300) (John3, Christopher2 Richter, Johannes1). John (300) was born at Trupbach, Germany, on 1 Dec 1711. He married Anna Catherine Fishback (301) at Franklin Co., VA, in 1733. John (300) died in Mar 1773 at Fauquier Co., VA, at age 61.
In 1733, John married his first cousin, Anna Catherine Fishback. Fauquier County records show John was active in acquiring large tracts of land, settling them into communities and then selling them to others. He sold his land near Germantown before moving to the northern part of the county. His will dated July 15, 1772 and probated March 22, 1773 leaves his wife the plantation "I live on", 300 acres during her life then to son, Henry. To son, Henry, 224 acres plus the 300 acres after his mother's death. Son, Daniel, a bequest but no land. Son, Charles, 201 acres called the Race Ground Lott. Son, Jacob, negroes, etc. Son, Benjamin, the plantation on which he lives, 106 acres. Son, Frederick, a bequest but no land. Grandson, John, 100 acres. Brother, Harmon, 100 acres on which he lives on Licking Run. After wife's death the property to be divided into eight equal parts and divided among sons; John, Daniel, Jacob, Charles, Benjamin, Frederick and "the children of my daughter, Catherine, deceased, and the children of my daughter, Elizabeth, now living. Wife and son, Henry, executors. Test: Henry Rector, Jacob Faubion, John Adams.

He was a Veteran American Revolution, Sgt. from Va. Charles Rector is listed in the D.A.R. Patriot Index as having served as a sergeant from Virginia during the American Revolution. He was one of the earliest settlers in Clark and Champaign Counties and settled at the mouth of Storms Creek on the Clark Champaign County line in 1801. The Rector Gard Cemetery is thought to be on this farm that was later owned by Emerson Gard. Charles moved to Ohio from Mason County, Ky. with his brother-in-law, Christopher Weaver, and is described in the W.H. Beers & Co. History of Clark County, Ohio as being: "a great Methodist, one of the early Class-leaders, and his word and opinion had much weight with the early settlers by whom he was highly respected.".

Dick's parents separated about 1928 and he was reared by his mother, spending some time with his grandfather, Elijah Shockey. He started spelling his last name "Browne" because of a clerical error made in 1941 after going to work for the New York Central Railroad. He had to add the "e" to his signature to cash payroll checks and used that spelling from then on. He was a Veteran W.W.II, U.S. Army, Persian Gulf Campaign.
